The proximity of electricity and water makes the bathrooms, kitchens or shower rooms potentially dangerous the most dangerous rooms in the property. Bathrooms and kitchens are , therefore, subject to strict building and safety regulations. It is against wiring regulations to install a socket outlet in a room containing a fixed bath or shower. The one exception is a purpose made shaver unit socket that complies with safety regulations and incorporates an isolating transformer.
In general, all lights and appliances should be operated by switches or controls that are out of reach of anyone using the bath, shower and kitchen sink. A wall mounted electric heater with exposed elements must always be installed out of reach. An exception to the rule the general rule is a switch incorporated into an electrical shower unit for example, but the shower unit must conform to British Standards. No wall switches for lights should be fitted inside the bathrooms. Lights must be either controlled by switches outside the bathroom or by a pull cords that are inside the bathroom room. All lamp holders must be fixed so as to be out of reach of anyone using the bath or shower. An appliance such as a hair dryer or a radio is not allowed in bathroom if it is mains operated. All electrical appliances with exposed conductive metal parts, a tower rail for example, must be earthed and the same time must be connected to accessible conductive parts of other equipment.
